the Texas Company, Port Arthur (Texas) and New York.

New York, January 21st, 1916.

Dear Sir

-

After pondering last night over the difficult problem of making people see that they are soting against their own in-

terests, the vision of your friendly figure arose in my mind on

waking this morning. This, at any rate, is my reason and ex-

ouse for writing you, ney asking you the bold question: Will you

be the kind nurse and stop what appears to be a childish dispute?

A matter which indirectly concerns you even as nursing the in-

terests of your good bank. Robert is a big boy Sibyl is much

younger, though of that age when girls are able to combat the

"might before right" attitude their big brothers are sometimes

assuming. That, at any rate, appears to be the psychology of

the misunderstanding which I now venture to explain to you, sub-

atituting Reiss for Robert and Sanders for sibyl.

-

Facts of the case: after protracted negotiations, my Company's

tenure of the agency of the Texas Company was made secure by the

appointment of Mr. Humphrey Cheetham as our agent, with the

approval of H.E. the Governor of Hongkong (oabled to us direct

by H.E.). We then ordered forward a cargo worth more than

50,000.

However when the vessel, carrying it, was a few days

"

off Hongkong, we received a cable from the Governor that his per-

mission given to Cheetham had been cancelled! Thereupon an in-

quiry, at which the Governor himself was present, was held and

resulted in Chee them's re-admittance; and, in order to provide

him with a strong local backing so as to preclude, as we thought

ery further unpleasantness to this perfectly loyal Englishman

-

my Company appointed Reiss & Co. Hongkong to act as his Advisors.
